Patient Education

Learn About Your Liver

Your liver is one of the body’s most important organs. It performs essential functions every day:
Processing nutrients, medications and hormones
Producing bile, helping absorb fats, cholesterol and vitamins
Producing clotting proteins
Regulating immune response and preventing infection
Removing bacteria and toxins from the blood

Liver Failure

Liver failure may be acute (rapid loss of function) or chronic (gradual scarring known as cirrhosis). Early diagnosis is critical and outcomes depend on cause and timely care.

Liver Transplant

When the liver can no longer perform its essential functions, transplantation replaces it with a healthy liver from a living or deceased donor — restoring quality of life.

Transplantation

Types of Liver Transplant

Living Donor Liver Transplantation (LDLT)

A portion of healthy liver from a willing, matched living relative is transplanted into the recipient. The donor's remaining liver regenerates to approximately 95% of its original size within 3–4 months, and recipients typically see a significant improvement in life expectancy and quality of life.

Deceased Donor Liver Transplantation (DDLT)

A liver donated by a deceased donor is transplanted into patients with end-stage liver failure on the national transplant waiting list. Recipients are carefully matched based on medical urgency, compatibility and clinical eligibility.

95%

Estimated Success Rate

With structured post-surgical recovery and follow-up, patients typically return to active lives with significantly improved long-term outcomes.
